Questions & Answers

Q. May I know a fail proof method of matching colours correctly when it comes to interior design?

-- Question posted by Karen Tan
Subject: Colours
A.

Knowledge is Power. There is on fool proof way of matching colours correctly.

To gain more confidence in colour matching, Understanding the “Colour Wheel” will certainly help. The “Colour Wheel” explains what colours are complimentary and what colours are contrasting.

Reference books on Colours are easily available at major bookstores.

Q. In interior design, what's the difference between a concept and a theme?

-- Question posted by Kenneth Chee
Subject: Concept & Theme
A. A good question indeed!

In interior design, a " concept " is an general perception of idea or thought. An idea at this stage is still at its exploratory stage... usually not definite or determined yet. A design “theme” however, is a definite “concept” to be adopted. For example, the theme of this interior is Victorian!

Hope this info helps.

Q. I'm helping a friend decorate a new place. Her sofa is red/burgundy and her walls are a deep tan. What colours can we use to really bring out the room?

-- Question posted by Nichole
Subject: Colour
A. I feel the burgundy sofa will certainly look dull and not work well with the deep tan sofa. Here are some suggestions to spice up the room a little and to give it a modern & plush look.

1. Wall Colour: Paint or use wallpaper of a lighter shade (e.g. Lily White) for other walls.
2. Cabinetry: Use lighter colour woods such as Beech or Maple to give texture to the room.
3. Paintings / Artefacts – Displays a few (preferably) modern art pieces or any artefacts that have a tint of burgundy to "tie-in" the room’s colour scheme. A silver frame will add a finishing touch.

Q. What would be a reasonable fee to pay an Interior Designer; from conceptualisation and full design to actualisation, on- and off-site coordination services and home styling?

-- Question posted by Shmoo G
Subject: Interior Designing Fees
A. Hi Shmoo G,
As a gauge, the design consultation fee inclusive of project management and home styling is usually about 10% of the total contract sum. Some interior designers charge a minimum fee for smaller projects (e.g., minimum $6000 for project sums below $60,000) and stick to 10% of the total contract sum for larger projects.

Q. After renovating my home, I still find something is lacking. Can you give me few tips to make my home look even better?

A. Below are the Ten Tips to make your home look better:

1.
Personalize your home with art and accessories.
2.
Repeat a colour at least three times in a room.
3.
Relate your art to its surroundings. Art prints placed about 6"-9" above a sofa will create a unified look.
4.
Cover two thirds of the space above furniture with one or more pieces of art to achieve proper proportion.
5.
Position artwork at "eye level" to look at the center of it from either a sitting or standing position.
6.
Vary the height of tabletop accessories for balance and interest.
7.
Create a formal look with symmetrical groupings of art. Create an informal look with asymmetrical groupings.
8.
Place mirrors so they reflect something beautiful. Use them to add dimension, expand space or reflect light in a room.
9.
Display art on easels to create interest in corners, bookcases or on tabletops.
10.
Custom frame artwork to coordinate with room decor. Select a frame that compliments the decorating style. Select mat colors that enhance both the art and color scheme.

Cheers!
