Winding Waters

The ancient Master Guo Pu wrote the Book of Burial in classical Chinese poetic wisdom that challenges the translation works by modern day authors and the interpretations in the most exacerbating way and satirical fashion are yet to be seen.

The often quoted but greatly misunderstood verse from his highly treasured book, describes Qi as ‘being dispersed upon riding the wind but stopped to be retained by the boundaries of water’.

This is but a superficial translation of the eight worded Chinese verse that qualifies Qi in the presence of wind and water and not the qualitative analysis of the elemental value in tangible forms. This verse continues to propel many practitioners and scholars to formulate and calculate the practicality of the applications to satisfy the needs of a modern bourgeois consumerist lifestyle. More confusion arises through the scholarly passion of practitioners promoting the art through varied interpretations that sparks the use of water indiscriminately and conveys the notion of water as wealth and the icon of materialistic possessions in the makings.

Qi is also translated as the English and scientific equivalent of energy but failed to encapsulate the doctrinal understanding of the impact of location harnessing on the true essence of Qi. It is neither the wind nor water that creates it. In fact wind and water can be detrimental to the existence of Qi when presented in the most active and vibrant state.

Many should have experienced the curse of water. With metaphysically challenged artists turn professionals proliferating the society, the proletariat never prosper with exotic water features in their residence for years and the bourgeoisie bankrupts with the applications of the most advance water formulae. They abandoned the most fundamental principle in comprehending the coagulation of Qi in the name of greed. While teachings can be adapted to the relevancy of the changing needs of society to keep up with the face of modernization, doctrines cannot be changed to suit the demands of the people.

A meandering river is good because of its sentimental value that may harness the Qi. A fast flowing rapid of white waters gathers no Qi though the power of energy is forcefully exhibited. A gentle water feature is preferred to the magnificently thunderous waterfall that often graces the entrances of many buildings. Stagnant water breeds contempt. Noise pollutes with the howling of the winds and the boisterousness of the waters.

Qi circulates like the land respires. A stagnant atmosphere suffocates the land. A breeze gently caresses the valley while the tornado fiercely uproots all that she crosses. The humidity and temperature of the land breeze collate the energy levels of different grounds where Qi can breathe. Qi expands and contracts like the wind beneath the wings; its existence lifts the prosperity of the land to higher grounds.

Riding high and mighty on the winds along the mountain path and accompanied by the rivers on the sides, Qi manifests when the wind comes to rest quietly at the riverbanks where the rivers cross the mountain’s path and to be contained and enhanced by the surrounding protective mountains that spiral the ground.
